Tribute Sarah Maldoror
A tribute to the French-born, Pan-African by adoption, film director who was the first woman to engage in film-making in Africa. From her masterpiece, Sambizanga (1972), onwards Maldoror - who was personally committed to the independence of the African states - depicted the despotic nature of colonialism and used cinema as an instrument of knowledge, struggle, and liberation for over half a century.
Festival dei Popoli is proud to present 12 films by a filmmaker who militated for justice and freedom with unwavering determination throughout her life.
This initiative is organized in cooperation with the Calliope Arts Foundation as part of the “Women Trailblazers in Documentary Cinema” programme. With the support of Unifrance, the Embassy of France, Istituto Francese Italia, Istituto Francese Firenze, and The Recovery Plan.
